Ghana appoints first woman speaker of the house

ACCRA, Ghana - Mrs. Joyce Bamford-Addo, a retired Supreme Court Justice, was on Wednesday elected unopposed as Speaker of the fifth Parliament of Ghana's Fourth Republic.
She was nominated by Mr Alban Bagbin, Majority Leader, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu.
Justice Bamford-Addo was then sworn in by the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood.
Born on 26 March, 1937, Bamford-Addo is the first female Speaker of the House.
She becomes the third highest person in the country after the President and Vice President.
