By SSI staff writer
NASSAU, Bahamas – Miss Universe Ethiopia, Melat Woldesenbet Yante, arrived in the Bahamas on Saturday and has made headlines since. Many critics are saying she is the surprise of the pageant and most beautiful of all African delegates.
In the latest Global Beauties poll released on Wednesday 05 July, 2009, Melat ranked 17th among the 84 contestants from around the world. Before her arrival she was not even in consideration, but is presently in serious contention for the crown.
The official Miss Universe photos released this week shows Melat wearing an original couture gown designed by Ethiopian Designer Amsale, which she will wear in the live broadcast. She visited the successful designer in New York last week in her final preparation for the finals. Miss Melat also visited the Miss Universe Headquarters in New York before she proceeded to the Bahamas.
During the upcoming weeks she will participate in the swimsuit and evening gown preliminaries as well as a charity auction and fashion show. The Miss Universe finals will be telecast to a live audience of more than 1 billion viewers on August 23. Her air travel was provided by Egypt Air, co-sponsored by the Sub-Saharan Informer newspaper. •
